Lynchburg is rich in history, both rail and non-rail such as the ex-courthouse now the Lynchburg Museum.

The N&W had Island Yard on an island in the middle of the James River that is now a park, as well as Kinney Yard. Southern of course had Montview Yard.

The town has also been an important business area and transportation center since the days of the James River and Kanawha canal which connected the city with Richmond. The canal ran through the middle of the mill district down by the river.
