SMRFest 2001, organized byJohn "Green Light" Ryan and Jerry "Southern Serves the South" Shepardson, was held in Charlotte on the weekend of September 21, 22 and 23, 2000. The location was the University City Methodist Church on Harris Boulevard., located between I-85 and I-77 on the north side of Charlotte. This was where we had the model display and clinics.
Friday and Saturday activities included several layout visits. Trains Limited, the local train store extended their normal business hours, and we had access to some very interesting slides and movies from Shelby Lowe and the Clinchfield Historical Society. On Saturday, we had another big model display as well as clinics at the church. Sunday activities included a visit to Spencer Shops for those who weren't heading home immediately.
Norfolk Southern's former Southern main line runs through Charlotte, as does the CSX Monroe-Bostic line. Unfortunately, Southern's Charlotte depot has been torn down for years. They have a nice model railroad hobby shop in Charlotte, Trains Limited. Another nice shop, The Little Choo Choo, is across from the Transportation Museum in Spencer, about 30 miles north on I-85.
